What You’ll Learn

Curriculum Overview

200 Hour Basic program

In this training, you will learn how to teach a yoga class, like those offered at Sanctuary. You’ll spend a significant amount of time learning about the poses – good alignment, effective cues &  variations/modifications. You’ll learn the tools needed to be a good teacher: presence in the room, how to use your voice, the balance between speaking & silence & how to lead students safely through a class. In this training, you’ll learn these things & get to put them into practice – you’ll have the opportunity to practice teaching within your training group & beyond, if desired.

Yoga Study

  • Study the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali & explore their relevance in modern day yoga & life. Delve more deeply into the ethical precepts of the yamas & niyamas.
  • Explore the 7 major chakras โ€“ including their colors, mantras, and characteristics โ€“ for personal development and self understanding.
  • Discover the Law of Attraction & how to practice using it to create a shift in thinking, with the intention to curate an open mind & heart for teaching & everyday living.
  • Practice the use of props, hands-on assists, and personalized modifications to create safe and accessible classes.
  • Understand how the practices of yoga, meditation & pranayama can help with down-regulating & balancing the nervous system, allowing for a more full & balanced life.

Practice & Teaching Skills

  • Build a consistent practice (asana & meditation) that supports your body, mind, and heart โ€” helping you show up with more awareness, resilience, and intention for lifelong physical and emotional health & well-being.
  • Learn to move & teach with clarity, building trust in your voice, your body & your ability to support others with confidence. Learn to teach intentionally sequenced classes, while adapting instructions to the level & limitations of the student.
  • Understand how to guide beginners & seasoned practitioners in the same or separate classes.
  • Effectively teach, sequence & cue the following: All-Levels Sanctuary Flow, Power Flow, Moderate Flow, and Slow Flow classes. 
  • Understand how establish clear & compassionate professional & ethical boundaries with students.

300 Hour Advanced program

The purpose of this program is to broaden & deepen your knowledge of the practice of yoga, as well as expand your skills & confidence as a teacher, in the studio & in life. This in-person training allows you to dive deeper into the practice of yoga. We will branch out from the Sanctuary flow, using it as a base to explore other styles & techniques so that you can determine what & how you want to teach. We will practice incorporating different elements into teaching & you will strengthen & expand your skills as a teacher & leader. 

History, Philosophy & Physiology

  • Explore key yoga philosophy texts including, but not limited to, the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita, and learn how to share these teachings with students in class in an approachable and meaningful way.
  • Deepen your understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, muscle function, joint movement, and connective tissue in relation to yoga practice.
  • Explore the nervous system, self-regulation, and polyvagal theory to better support students physically and energetically.
  • Establish/Define your role as a teacher & leader & your responsibilities to others, on & off the mat. 
  • Demonstrate hands-on assists that will support & enhance the student experience through ensuring permission, embodying a grounded and balanced posture, using touch effectively & demonstrating appropriate energy and intention.

Implementation & Integration

  • Strengthen leadership & communication skills through giving & receiving compassionate & beneficial feedback to/with other teachers, around class structure, sequencing & teaching methodology, with the intention to assist in personal & professional growth & development.
  • Clarify your teaching niche, personal style, and professional direction as a yoga teacher.
  • Explore the business of yoga, including branding, workshops, retreats, private sessions, and growing your classes confidently.
  • Develop confidence in creating and teaching themed classes with effective cuing, pacing, vocal tone, and presence.
  • Learn to adapt poses and class experiences to support students of all body types, abilities, injuries, and life stages, incorporating the use of props when appropriate.
  • Learn to apply the use of different props (straps, blocks, blankets & bolsters) into any style of class in order to help students support their unique structure and needs.
