Start Here

I got an email from Sunday River this weekend – it’s a ski resort in Maine. They had overnight/morning temps of 30 on the mountain, so they fired up their snow guns & did a test run for winter.

I get so excited when I read stuff like that. I get excited for snow & skiing & all things winter….then winter hits & I’m taking a nap with a heated blanket every day & not wanting to get back up:)

Can anyone relate?

One of my teachers used to say “anticipation is a killjoy”. I pondered that a lot over the years. I think I disagree. I think the energy of anticipation is fun. I think expectation is the killjoy. Anticipation is open-ended. Expectation is, well, you expect it turn out a certain way. I expect I will like winter, but then…

Either way, anticipation & expectation both take you out of the moment & that may be the biggest killer of joy. Being in the moment, fully present. Granted, the present moment isn’t always easy or doesn’t always feel joyful. But when we aren’t present, we miss out on a lot.

A good place to start is…can you guess? (I’m actually not going to say “a good place to start is on your mat”, although your practice does help). A good place to start is right here, right now. And then in 1, 3 or 5 minutes – start again. The beauty of it is, you can start anywhere, anytime. Just noticing when you are not present & inviting yourself back. Sound familiar? I feel like I have said that more times than I can count. That’s because I am still practicing.

If you’d like some support as you practice, come in & join me for class this week. Then by the time winter gets here, maybe we’ll enjoy being present for it:)
